Our speakers look at statistics to bring home their point about the lack of gender diversity in the judicial dispensation system. Dispute resolution could and will benefit from a female perspective. Arbitrating, like many other professional arenas, may suffer from an unconscious bias, when it comes to the dearth of women arbitrators. Lack of visibility of women arbitrators may further add to the dearth. Women need to prepare themselves with the necessary skills, not shy away from asking for specific kind of work from their peers and clients and also assert their capability, without doubt. Institutional arbitrations are moderately better when it comes to male-female ratio in arbitrator representation. The number of years of relevant experience one needs, to qualify for being appointed an arbitrator and the accreditation/ certifications required to be considered a commercially and judicially prudent option to be nominated as an arbitrator is highlighted. Nuanced factors such as co-arbitrating with retired judges of courts and perceived complexity involved in the disputes, may operate as obstacles in the appointment of advocates as arbitrators. Is Arbitrating a viable career option? Listen in.
